orchids.jpgProfessor Steve Klitzing brought his orchid program to an appreciative roomful of experienced and would-be orchid growers last night. The computer engineer, game designer, and former college professor has turned an orchid growing pastime into an entertaining workshop that has been held at venues all over the Bay Area.  We learned  growing techniques and troubleshooting. (They like to be slightly pot bound, don’t want to be soggy, and should be fertilized reguarly with half strength solution, among other things). Professor Steve, who has also flirted with a career in stand-up comedy, brought with him  an array of beautiful and interesting plants to illustrate his points. At the end of the program, he delighted the audience when he spread newspaper on a large table in the meeting room,  broke open an overgrown 5 gallon pot of cymbidiums,  flared up his torch to sterilize his cutting tools, and began to demonstrate the proper techniques for dividing the plant. Soon everyone was involved and had an opportunity to try a little hands- on orchid propagation. Nearly everyone went home with a starter plant!
