Joseph and his overcoat story

The Hayward Parents’ Nursery School has done several wonderful special storytimes for us recently. On December 26th they presented Joseph and his Overcoat and did a fun craft. They will return on January 2nd with “Caps for Sale”. Our regular schedule of winter storytimes will begin on January 16th. Please stop at the Information Desk or call (510)670-6280 to register.

Greeting card ornaments

The children’s room was a crafting workshop on Saturday when children (of all ages!) made ornaments from recycled greeting cards. If you missed the program, stop by the children’s desk to see some of the creations, and we can give you instructions for making these at home.

gift-in-a-jar.jpg

On Saturday, we had our Holiday Gifts in a Jar program.  Local teens dropped in to create a festive, layered, quick pour cookie mix that they could give to a loved one for the holidays.  The recipe of the day was an oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookie mix which seemed to be a hit with the participants.  Towards the end of the program we hovered on the brink of a small chocolate chip crisis, as our stockpile sunk dangerously low (I attribute this to a combination of a rather liberal usage of chocolate chips in their recipe, and some extracurricular “taste testing” of the product)  When it was all said and done, we survived the shortage, and everybody had a good time and went home with a great looking (and hopefully tasting) gift.

nate-mileys-party.jpgSupervisor Nate Miley hosted a staff appreciation lunch for Alameda County staff working with people who live in the unincorporated area of the County.  Nate reminded us that the unincorporated area he represents has a population of over 100,000 people, the size of a medium sized city!

The delicious lunch was prepared and served by his office staff.  Pictured here is Nate, with the Library staff who attended.

Castro Valley Citizens for Middle Eastern Awareness

Sarhar and Ruth, members of Castro Valley Citizens for Middle Eastern Awareness, a group of Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Palestinian women have created a beautiful display representing the way in which the holidays are celebrated by the three main religions of the Middle East.  This is the seventh year the group has provided a holiday display for the library.  The display will be in the library until January 7th.  Questions about the group or the display can be e-mailed to: Farha34@aol.com

creek-with-water-2.jpg  With the coming of the rain, our creek has water in it.  Up until last week the daylighted creek next to the site of the new library looked pretty dry, but now it is really flowing.
