Chinese lanterns and tangram puzzle art

Lots of Castro Valley kids prepared to celebrate the year of the Ox by making crafts last Saturday. They could choose to make a lantern or play a tangram puzzle game–or both! We had a number of nice compliments about the crafts and several requests for the patterns. These crafts and many others for Chinese New Year are from the library’s copy of Randel McGee’s Paper Craft Fun for Holidays: Chinese New Year. You may remember Randel from his appearance last summer at the Summer Reading Game kickoff, when he brought his friend Groark with him. If you liked the crafts, post a comment and we will be sure he gets your feedback! Have a prosperous New Year–Gung Hay Fat Choy!

The library has received another AWE Early Literacy Station, thanks to the generosity of our Friends of the Library! The two stand-alone computers are pre-loaded with dozens of fun games and learning programs, such as Just Grandma and Me, Green Eggs & Ham, Peep Floats, and Stellaluna. They also have a Krazy Art Room, Millie’s Math House, Reader Rabbit, SpongeBob Typing plus many more. And now all the computer programs have their Spanish equivalents available too! Come on in and try out your favorites!
