FEBRUARY LEGOS CLUB

We had a blast today building anything our imaginations could create.  Boats, airplanes, cars, and any kind of truck we could think of.  Check out our gallery below and  join us next time!  We’ll be creating again on March 12th @ 1-2pm

Snakes at the Castro Valley Library! by librarianmama

Snakes weren’t the only reptile visiting the Castro Valley Library with the Coyote Hills Naturalist Program.  A lovely little box turtle named Shelby joined Fox the gopher snake to educate and entertain us.  The kids learned lots of facts about reptiles and shared their own knowledge with the Naturalists.  Special thanks to the wonderful Naturalists and docents with Coyote Hills Regional Park.  Be sure to check out the Naturalist’s calendar and visit them soon:  http://www.ebparks.org/activities/naturalists

The Castro Valley community helped usher in the Year of the Rabbit on Sunday afternoon, January 30. Multicultural Educational Research Center (M.E.R.C.) partnered with the Library to bring the event to Chabot & Canyon Rooms. Patty Chu’s
folkdance class provided lively entertainment, members the Chinese Youth Symphony gave performances on the traditional Chinese Harp (Gu-Zheng), and Henry Li offered a dazzling martial arts demonstration, including wushu, where he wielded a sword.
Participants practiced paper cutting crafts and traditional calligraphy, while snacking on traditional treats.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, people born in the Year of the Rabbit are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit people seldom lose their temper. They are clever at business and being conscientious, never back out of a contract

Thank you to the staff and parents from M.E.R.C. school for bringing this beautifully organized event to the Library.

On an overcast afternoon, teens descended to the library in droves in anticipation for our Duct Tape Wallet program. Funneling into the Learning Center they were met with a cornucopia of color of the tactile tape, all ready to use for their own creation. We had anywhere from 30-35 people during the entire 1 1/2 hours program.

The host of the program, Annie, was running around like crazy for the entire the duration of the program helping teens out. To say she was busy is a huge understatement, but she persevered and was fantastic with the teens

There were a lot of really cool designs and some really creative color combinations that the teens came up with. Some even put little pockets and containers inside their wallet for extra storage

If you missed out on the fun, no need to worry, you’ll be able to make a duct tape wallet at the following libraries:
