Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine by librarianmama

   Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine

Imagine seeing the world in black and white and trying to navigate yourself through an unbelievable loss.  Caitlyn tries to do just that after losing her brother in a middle school shooting.  She struggles with Aspergers Syndrome and seeks the definition of closure as a way to recover from such a devastating loss.  Read a review below from a member of the Castro Valley Library’s Parent/Child Book Club:

I’d rate Mockingbird a 4.5 out of 5 stars. This book was touching, but it was very depressing for me to see what Caitlyn and her dad were going through. It’s nice to know how an autistic child actually feels and thinks. It is much different from the way I think and do things everyday. It was a good book and I learned that I should change the way I think about autistic people around me.

Still a few more weeks of fun, fun, fun! by deniseqbaker

You still have a few more weeks to read, read, read and win prizes in the Summer Reading Game. This Monday, we will have Dan Chan the Magic Man and Kat the Acrobat, and our final performers for the summer will be the Fratello Marionettes with their “Carnival of the Animals” puppet show on Monday August 8th. Both programs start at 2pm.

We have had some fun performers in the past week or so, including Gary Lapow, Daffy Dave, and a special storytime visit from Theresa from Music Together. Watch this four minute highlight of their shows!

Snakes at the Castro Valley Library! by librarianmama

Snakes weren’t the only reptile visiting the Castro Valley Library with the Coyote Hills Naturalist Program.  A lovely little box turtle named Shelby joined Fox the gopher snake to educate and entertain us.  The kids learned lots of facts about reptiles and shared their own knowledge with the Naturalists.  Special thanks to the wonderful Naturalists and docents with Coyote Hills Regional Park.  Be sure to check out the Naturalist’s calendar and visit them soon:  http://www.ebparks.org/activities/naturalists

Magic Alex thanked the Friends of the Library too!

Magic Alex came back to the Castro Valley Library on Saturday after his two-year stint as the “Magical Zingmaster” for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He told the audience about how books helped him learn his first magic. Some of his first shows were in libraries, and that is why he loves coming back home to do library shows between his other commitments.

Alex will be appearing in his own show at the Lesher Center in Walnut Creek on Saturday April 16. He is also working on a new library show especially for grownups who want to learn more about the mysteries of magic! This 25-year-old master magician will demonstrate his best magic and then audience members will have an opportunity to participate in the show, and to ask questions like “What was it like living on the circus train?” or  “How did you learn your lines in Japanese and other languages when you were traveling all over the world with Disney Live! “Mickey’s Magic Show?” So if you want to really know how he does it, check with the library to find out when he will be visiting us again!

Last Program of 2010! by librarianmama

We just finished up our last program of  the year and more than 150 people joined us!  Sulphur Creek came by to read with a screech owl, rabbit, tortoise and mice to enrich the storytime.  The kids had a great time listening and participating in the stories and touching some of the animals.  What an amazing group of volunteers who donate their time to Sulphur Creek!   Sulphur Creek Nature Center is a wildlife education and rehabilitation facility whose mission is to promote the conservation of local environmental resources by fostering an appreciation and understanding of the animals in the world around us, and encouraging peaceful coexistence between people and native wildlife by serving as a community resource for wildlife issues.  The Castro Valley Library will continue to host programs with Sulphur Creek in the New Year in our outdoor amphitheater.   Look for the Hayward Area Recreation Activities Guide for more information or contact the Library.  You can find Sulphur Creek on the web @ http://www.haywardrec.org/sulphur_creek.html

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Last Lego Club of 2010 by librarianmama

We enjoyed our last Lego Club for 2010 today at the Castro Valley Library.  Our theme was winter and we built some sleighs, Christmas themes and lots of spaceships (as usual).  More than 200 builders and their parents turned out to burn off some holiday energy and build lots of unique creations.  The TRO (Teens Reaching Out) Volunteers were incredibly helpful as usual (some even built their own creations), and the library is very thankful for their help.

Happy New Year and see you next year on Saturday, February 12th for our next Lego Club!

Nearly 250 kids and parents turned out  Tuesday 11/23 for the robotic presentation and Lego Club meeting in the Chabot/Canyon Room at the Castro Valley Library.  We were treated to a Robotic demonstration by Johannes van Galen who teaches a Lego Robotics class in San Leandro (info@playbuildingbricks.com for more information).  Johannes showed the large crowd how it it possible to program robots using the Lego Mindstorms (NXT) Robotics Invention System.   A great time was had by all!

Don’t miss the next meeting December, 23 @ 1pm at the Castro Valley Library
