bookclub4.jpgLast night the Castro Valley Library launched a new book club for adults. A dozen local residents met with book club facilitator Steven Fitzgerald to select the first title. Steven is a Castro Valley resident and recent Library School graduate who’s been working with us for several months in the Homework Assistance Center and other projects. He’s recently taken a job with the Santa Clara County Library system. The Book Club will meet the fourth Tuesday of the month, but due to the Christmas holiday next month, there will be a 3 week turnaround for the first title, The Picture of Dorian Gray. When the group meets on December 18, members will  bring 3 title suggestions for consideration and the group will set up calendar for the next few months’ reading of “member selected” titles. We hope it will be a casual and fun evening for readers to exchange ideas and opinions. The group agreed books may include recent bestsellers, classics and old favorites, both fiction and non-fiction. There are a limited number of spaces still available and we will maintain a waiting list; let us know if you are interested.

Thirty-nine entries from kids aged three to 44 competed for the glory in the first annual LEGO Design Contest on Saturday. A Grand Prize and four runner-up prizes were awarded in two age categories, and all entrants received a “Super LEGO Designer badge”.

Our two esteemed judges, Tracy Baker and Andrew Quadri, had difficult choices to make, as there were so many excellent entries. Since they were asked to use “creativity” as the major factor in their decisions, they both talked to many of the entrants to learn about their creative process and the stories behind their designs. Many of the entries can be seen in the library’s display case through December 8th. Come in and take a look! By popular demand, the library will be starting a monthly Saturday afternoon LEGO club. The first club meeting is on January 12th at 2pm. Call the library at 670-6280 to sign up. Space is limited!

csv_model4.jpgWe now have a 3 dimensional model of the new Castro Valley Library facility.  Click on the picture for a full view.  We are getting closer to groundbreaking, and still looking towards Spring of 2008.

If you’ve been over to the site lately you’ll see that the boulders that were scattered about the library site have been moved over to the area we are hoping to see developed into a pocket park.

public-art.jpgRecommended artists’ proposals for the New Castro Valley Library are on display here at the Redwood Road location through November 24. Recommendations for commissions will be made to the Board of Supervisors at a public meeting December 4. Art Panels, made up of community members and Library staff, under the direction of the Alameda County Art Commission,  first reviewed artists’ applications  based on their body of work and portfolio submissions. Four finalists in each category (except small scale work) were invited to submit proposals. Proposals were subject to public review at a variety of venues with opportunity for feedback. Art Panels reconvened for a second all day session to review the public comments and listen to presentations by the artist themselves. Art installations will be commissioned for the Library entry exterior wall, creek side fence, new book area, children’s area and teen area. Three small scale works will be commissioned for various locations throughout the new building.
