While many of us were watching the Academy Awards last night the Channel 5 news presented a piece on the daylighting of the creek next to the library.

Take a look.

Last Saturday, Castro Valley Library LEGO club members and race enthusiasts descended upon Children’s Moving Up Area Speedway to pit their highly creative and unique race cars against each other.  It was a highly competitive field consisting of 16 entrants with each race being a best of 3 contest.  The highlight of the competition was an epic series of races pitting brother against brother.  Both cars were so evenly matched that we had to have 6 races to determine a winner because we had 3 ties.  Eventually a winner was crowned in the “brothers” showdown and this winner went on to capture the championship of the Children’s Moving Up Area Cup !!!  When all was said and done everybody involved had a good time and half the fun was checking out other people’s creative car designs.  Be sure to come to our next LEGO club meeting on Monday, March 24th from 2:00-3:00.  Our theme will be space vehicles…hope to see you there

Stars of the Happy Birds show

An enthusiastic crowd enjoyed the antics of the Happy Birds on Saturday. Their tricks included dunking a basketball, riding a skateboard, roller skating, raising a flag, flying through a series of hoops, and singing “Clementine”.  These “Saturday Specials” are programs funded by the Alameda County Library Foundation. Our next Special will feature comedy magician Ashkenazi the Pretty Good who is “more fun than a barrel of squid” on March 8th at 2pm. Hope to see you then!

bookclub2.jpgLibrary customers often ask if we can give them a list of books they’ve read, but we don’t keep such histories. There are several websites to keep track of your reading and one especially easy and fun to use is  www.goodreads.com, a social networking site for readers. You may use it to keep track of your reading, post your own reviews, comment on books, get reviews from other readers who’ve logged in, and share lists with those you invite to join. You can set your preferences to share or not and still be able to read other readers comments and reviews. (Your contact information is never available to strangers). It seems to me the reviews are more succinct and thoughtful than many of the typical “Amazon” reviews. This site is growing each day and it’s great to see so many avid readers out there! Some of you may already be on goodreads. Let us know what you think!
