Need a good New Year’s resolution? Join one of the great book clubs at the Castro Valley Library.

When you join a book club you’ll get to know people in your community and be exposed to new books and perspectives. Take it from a librarian, reading provides mental stimulation by expanding your vocabulary, increasing your analytical skills, and improving your focus and concentration. Plus our book clubs are fun!

The Library has four free book clubs to choose from.

If you love a good mystery, join the Mystery Book Club for a lively discussion of classic and current crime fiction. The club is facilitated by best-selling mystery writer, Camille Minichino, a Castro Valley resident, on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm.  Drop in or contact Ms. Minichino at camille@minichino.com.

Our eBestseller Book Club is for adults interested in getting a taste of reading eBooks on a Library-owned NOOK tablet. Attend the first meeting on February 10th to receive your NOOK tablet and learn how to use it. Then on March 10th, April 14th, and May 14th at 6:30 pm the group will meet to discuss a bestselling book preloaded on the NOOKs. Advance registration is required, so come to the Library to sign up and learn about the requirements for participation. This book club is limited to 12 people. Contact Chris Selig at cselig@aclibrary.org for more information.

In the Parent-Child Book Club, parents read and discuss the same books as their sons and daughters. The conversations can bring families closer together and foster community with other families. The club meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7 pm and is recommended for ages 9 to 12. Stop by the Library to sign up and learn about upcoming dates and titles.

Lastly there’s the original Castro Valley Library Book Club for adults who want to read and discuss a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction selected by club members and librarians. This book club meets on the last Tuesday of each month from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. At the next meeting on Tuesday, January 27th we’ll be discussing A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby. Stop by the Library to sign up or just drop in. Contact Chris Selig at cselig@aclibrary.org for more information.

The Library is located at 3600 Norbridge Avenue. Call us at 510-667-7900 for more information.

Castro Valley Library e-best seller Book Club off to a great start! by library1.5

Filed under: Book Sale, Books, Libraries, News, Programs, Technology, Uncategorized

The Castro Valley Library e-bestseller book club is up and running! Sponsored entirely by the Friends of the Castro Valley Library, we bought Nook Tablets from Barnes & Noble and loaded them with a variety of recent and current New York Times bestsellers. The e-book club program, which is among the first of its kind in public libraries, is made up of 15 members who join for a 4 month session.  The first session ran September 2012-December 2012. The current book club runs through April 2013, when we will collect the Nook Tablets and start again with a spring/ summer group.

At the first meeting members are issued the Nook and receive training on its use, followed by 3 monthly book club meeting discussions of selected titles.  Besides the discussion titles, everyone is free to read as many of the other books as they can manage in the 3 months. Without exception readers have enjoyed the e-book experience. Association of American Publishers just released figures showing a 35% increase in e-book sales last year and that amounted to a billion dollars in sales! Looks like electronic format is here for good. If you are interested in taking part of the next session (April-July, 2013), or for more information or to sign up go to the Library Information Desk.

Winding Down Winter Programs by librarianmama

We have our final program of the season today @ 1pm.  Kung Fu Panda 2 will play in the Chabot/Canyon Room.

Sulphur Creek brought critters yesterday to share.  An owl, mouse and rabbit were part of the program and we had a crowd (photo below).  Thanks to Sulphur Creek for their wonderful programming.

In January we have a new program coming to the library, Kids for the Bay will bring their worm composting program to the Castro Valley Library.  This program is suitable for children in 1st-5th.  We have limited availability and registration is required.   You can register @ the Children’s Desk.  Here’s hoping you all have a safe and Happy New Year!
