Summer is officially here and the library is busy and bustling! Here are just some of the things that are happening:

  • Reading games for children, teens, and adults
  • Family entertainment every Monday at 2pm
  • Storytimes on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings
  • Reading Buddies available on Thursday afternoons from 3-5pm
  • Adult and teen programs are scheduled throughout the summer

More than 90 tween (6th through 9th grade) Kid Power Volunteers are helping with the Kids’ Summer Reading Game. Over 800 children signed up to play already, and are working toward fun prizes!

Many high school students have volunteered for community service and show up at regular one to two hour shifts to help with simple shelving and straightening up. And, you know what else? Community members are finding it’s nice and cool in here compared to the warm outside temperatures this week!

bead displayCastro Valley resident artist Cheryl  Archer displays some of her beautiful original beadwork creations in the large display case in the Library lobby through the end June.

Beading is one of the most popular hobbies in the U.S. and the fastest growing craft for the those under 35 (Interweave Press)  The hobby requires wire, wire cutters, an assortment of beads and closures to create an endless assortment of  jewelry and decorative pieces. Bead stores are scattered throughout the Bay Area, including right here in Castro Valley. The Library’s assorted books about beading enjoy a brisk circulation. Cheryl’s display shows the work of a seasoned hobbyist.  The turquoise creation in the top right corner has 14 components, including shell, bone and Austrian crystals.

Our Kid Power volunteers are ready and waiting for you to sign up for our Summer Reading Game “Be Creative @your Library”. They will give you a game board and explain what you need to do! You will even get a “Creative Genius at Work!” door hanger and a bookmark/coupon for free French fries at Carl’s Jr. just for signing up!  When you have done enough reading to get to the first prize level, you will receive a  free pass to the Lawrence Hall of Science and to the Charles M. Schulz Museum (where you can walk the Snoopy maze and see Charlie Brown’s kite-eating tree), a coupon for a free kid’s meal at Carls Jr., and a studio pass for the Museum of Children’s Art (MOCHA) in Oakland. Continue reading until you reach the Final prize level and you will be awarded a San Francisco Giants pencil pouch and a super cool transformer pen to put in it.

New this year are special activities for pre-readers, who receive their own age-appropriate prizes–a “Creative Genius” picture frame/magnet, and an oh-so-cute book-reading rubber duckie.

We also have a fun lineup of children’s events every Monday at 2pm from June 15th through August 10th. This Monday, come see one of your all-time favorites, Magic Dan, and pick up a flyer with the full listings!
